The Order of The Hatchet Series

This isn't about my preschool storytimes at all but I just spent a few hours working this out so want to document it somewhere on the web. Here is what I think is the ideal order for reading The Hatchet series in.

The Hatchet books are a series written by Gary Paulsen. They are also known as Brian's Saga, The Brian Books and The Brian Robeson Series.

1 Hatchet (1987)
2 The River AKA Hatchet : The Return AKA The Return (1991) ISBN 0385303882
3 Hatchet : Winter AKA Brian's Winter (1996)
This book was written after The River but is based on events as they would have developed in an alternate ending for Hatchet. In order to read the series and not have any contradictions, it is best to read The River before reading Hatchet : Winter and to disregard The River in relation to the continuity of the series.
4 Hatchet : The Call AKA Brian's Return (1999) ISBN 0330376020
The alternate title for this book is very similar to the alternate titles of The River so ensure that the correct title is ordered. For this reason, ISBN numbers are included for both of these titles.
5 Brian's Hunt (2003)
6 Hatchet : The Truth (2001) AKA Guts: The True Stories Behind Hatchet and The Brian Books
This book is not strictly part of The Hatchet Series. But will be of interest to readers of the series. It is a non-fiction book by Gary Paulsen detailing his life experience that inspired him to write The Hatchet Series.

Hope this helps some people. I spent a while looking for a definitive answer online.

In this felt story I start by saying "I went walking one day and I saw..."
Then I make the noise of the animal I am going to put on the board next and describe it a little e.g. This animal goes "meow" and has soft fur and some whiskers.

9 Poppa Pugleaesee Drawing Story

(Draw the story as you tell it)

Poppa Pugleasee is round and fat,

With two pointy ears and a little black hat.

He has diamonds for eyes and a triangle nose,

And very sharp claws at the end of his toes.

His little pink tongue is kind of funny,

And he eats too much by the look of his tummy.

He wags his tail when I give him a pat,

I love Poppa Pugleasee because he's my....... CAT

(pause for the children to respond with the answer).

I use a cat puppet and felt board mice for this. The kids love seeing the cat sneak all around the back of the felt board before finally puncing and dragging away the unlucky mouse

Parrot On My Shoulder

We use two felt parrot mitts for this.

Two little parrots on my shoulder preched
Bring hands up with parrot mitts on each shoulder
One flew away and then there was one
Put one mitt behind your back
The other flew away and then there were none
Put both mitts behind your back

One flew back and said "Hello Polly!"
Bring one mitt back to shoulder
The other flew back and said "I'd like a cracker by golly!"
Bring other parrot back

Little Red Hen

We have felt pictures of the animals to go along with this story, children love the repetition and ending

One day the little red hen found some seeds on the ground. The little red hen had an idea. She would plant the seeds.
The little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me plant the seeds?"
"Not I," said the lazy frog.
"Not I," said the sleepy rat.
"Then I will do it myself!" said the little red hen. So the little red hen planted the seeds all by herself.

When the seeds had grown, the little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me cut the wheat?"
"Not I," said the lazy frog.
"Not I," said the sleepy rat.
"Then I will do it myself!," said the little red hen. So the little red hen cut the wheat all by herself.

When all the wheat was cut, the little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me take the wheat to the mill to be ground into flour?"
"Not I," said the lazy frog.
"Not I," said the sleepy rat.
"Then I will do it myself!," said the little red hen. So the little red hen brought the wheat to the mill all by herself, ground the wheat into flour, and carried the heavy sack of flour back to the farm.

The tired little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me bake the bread?"
"Not I," said the lazy frog.
"Not I," said the sleepy rat.
"Then I will do it myself!," said the little red hen. So the little red hen baked the bread all by herself.

Mr Owl

We have a fantastic owl puppet with a swivel head we use for this

Late at night when you're in bed,
Mr. Owl perks up his head.
He looks left and he looks right,
In the dark all through the night.
Hear him hoot when you're in bed,
When Mr. Owl perks up his head.

Once I saw a little bird

I'm taking a departure from my usual posting style to tell you about a musical resource that I find indispensible! There are two children's music performers in New Zealand called Tessa Grigg and Brian Ringrose and they are Tessarose Productions. They specialise in preschool and babytime music and everything they do is GREAT! Especially Sing a Song for Babies and Sing a Song Vol's 1 - 4 . This is a felt story that has a lot of different animal houses - nest, chicken coop, kennel, basket, stable, cave ete. I ask the kids who lives in this house and if they need extra help, I make the noise of the animal

We made a felt board of a basic house, square, roof, doors, windows and just asked the kids what goes next and how many windows should we have etc. It was very simple but they loved it

9 Three Blind Jellyfish

We do this with three jellyfish we made out of cardboard with bubble wrap for their 'legs'. They sit on a rock we made out of cardboard but they could just sit on the feltboard too.

Scarf Activity

Hand out a small scarf or scrap of fabric to each child. Get them to smush it down into their fist until a tiny bit sticks out of their clenched fist. Then ask them if they can see the seed, then the shoot starts to grow, and grow, and grow (while you are doing this pull out more and more of the fabric) until finally you have a huge plant to wave around.

On 'swiming' make a swimming motion and 'over the hills and far away' make a large wave motion with hands together.

I do this with a felt set of 5 little ducks, one mother duck and a pond. You can also do it with one hands five fingers being the little ducks and the other hand being the mother duck "quack quack quacking". On 'swiming' make a swimming motion and 'over the hills and far away' make a large wave motion with hands together.

B Balloon

What you need:
A blue balloon
Simple and clear pictures of things that start with B

Blow up the balloon, show children pictures and affix them to the balloon. Then hit it to children and ask them to find the baby or whatever other b things you have on the balloon. I found Clip Art a good source for the pictures.

You can send parents home with a balloon and template of the pictures so they can make it at home.
